Poster produced for the Belgian State Railway to promote rail services to Brugge, which is here promoted in connection with the Netherlandish Old Master painters who were active in the city in the 15th century. Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling and Gerard David are specifically listed. The tripartite format of the poster’s illustration calls to mind the magnificent triptychs for which those artists are known. In the central panel, a woman in early 20th century dress is being shown a sculpted altar decoration by a woman wearing a 15th century headress, while two examples of the city’s picturesque architecture are shown on either side.
