Engelberg's starting point goes far back to the foundation of its Benedictine Monastery in 1120. For almost 700 years, Engelberg, a village with agriculture, used to be a monastery town. Today, the resort is embedded into an autonomous, political municipal office, which, in turn is based on the constitution of the higher authority of the Canton of Obwalden. The first facilities for visitors and guests were established around 1800. Shortly thereafter, the village had already gained the reputation of a prestigious international spa and tourist resort.
