Newbould started the landscape school of English poster design and achieved great impact through his use of flat, solid colors. He was one of the few artists working on British railway posters who was also a fine lithographer. Calling him ""one of our best-known designers,"" Austin Cooper described his works as characterized by ""simplified realism, a masterly use of harmonious color, an irreproachable sense of values, a ruthless elimination of unnecessary detail"" (Cooper, p. 89). ""The Great North of Scotland Railway opened Cruden Bay Hotel and Golf Course in 1899. Under the auspices of the LNER, Cruden Bay was widely promoted. Inclusive fare excursions were available from Aberdeen, but fewer golfers than expected were attracted. In 1932 the service to Cruden Bay was withdrawn. In 1939 the hotel was requisitioned as an army hospital. . . . Perhaps Cruden Bay was too far for English golfers to travel when Gleneagles and St. Andrews were on the way, or perhaps the golfing season was too short and there were no other real attractions-whatever the reason, Cruden Bay was a flop"" (Railway Posters, p. 140). Despite this postwar setback, Cruden Bay is now a popular resort town whose two miles of sandy beach attracts day-trippers and holidaymakers alike. The golf course continues to flourish and has been recognised as one of the Top 40 courses in Britain.
