Among the several thousand posters produced during the Spanish Civil War, this one stands out on several counts. First, for its impactful design: A peasant rises from a wheat field, raising his sickle and a bayonet impaling and ugly snake. Cut off right below the figure's massive shoulders, the image has a tension and power that go far beyond the bulging muscles. A glow signifying the fiery spirit of the revolution lights the bottom of the poster, blending up into a hopeful blue sky. Even as a small placard the image would be strong; but its size is unusually large for this genre and adds immeasurable force to the vigor of the design.
