On New Year's Eve of 1899, while Mucha was decorating the Pavillion of Bosnia and Herzogovina for the 1900 Paris World's Fair, the artist made a resolution: to give up his successful career in decorative arts and devote himself completely to painting on behalf of the Czech nation. It took nearly a decade to put the plan into effect, but by 1910 he was able to settle at Zbiroh in western Bohemia, between Prague and Pilsen, where he would spend the next 18 years on his magnum opus: The Slav Epic, a suite of 20 monumental paintings, combining symbolism and realism, tracing the history of the Slav peoples from their mythic beginnings until the modern day. This portrait, commissioned by one of the leading citizens of Pilsen and in the hands of the family until now, is of a nubile Montenegrin girl whom Mucha used as a model in the Slav Epic; he created the fokloric headdress she is wearing himself.
