Gaudy was a Belgian painter, magazine illustrator and posteristóan accomplished cyclist who specialized in bicycle and automobile subjects. At the turn of the century and up until the ë20s, the two vehicles were often manufactured by the same company, as we see here. Gaudy contrasts ""the quiet forlorn look of the sophisticated cyclistÖ(with) the almost clownish features of the riders of the odd, new threatening contraption that beckons a new eraÖA man's bicycle model Öis shown, although Legia at this time also manufactured women's models"" (Bicycle Posters, p. 6). With its large areas of flat color and heavily outlined figure, the design shows the influence of the Japanese woodblock prints in vogue at the time and that is characteristic of Gaudy's work.
