For anyone who was a golfer in 1928, the name Del Monte was magic. In the summer of 1880, the Pacific Improvement Company of San Francisco had opened the luxurious Del Monte Hotel on a parcel of land on the Monterey peninsula. Wealthy guests trained in from San Francisco on the Southern Pacific's Del Monte Express. They were picked up at the station and driven to the resort where they enjoyed polo, boating, the golf course and horsedrawn carriage rides along the peninsula's breathtaking 17-Mile Drive. Its not clear whether the poster refers to the ""old"" Del Monte Hotel or the ""new"" Del Monte Lodge at Pebble Beach. Originally a log cabin-cottage-and-picnic place along the drive, the lodge became a grand facility in 1919 under general manager Samuel F. B. Morse-grandson of the old coder himself. Morse went on to establish a ""green belt"" of golf courses that saved the area from commercial development. The hotel closed in 1942 and reopened as the U.S. Naval Postgraduate Center in 1948. Del Monte Lodge is now considered one of the world's most beautiful and its devilish ""dog-leg"" seventh hole one of the world's most challenging: Overshoot your drive and you disappear into the Pacific. At either spot in 1928, women certainly played golf, but the mixed foursome shown would have been unusual. Riders, sailboats and a stand of Monterey pines in the background suggest the area's other pleasures.
