From Taylor's overhead view, the waterfront of this holy city in the land of sunshine and colors dominated by flat blocks of buff and pink-tan along with lozenge shapes in marigold and terra-cotta (umbrellas that shade the priests who sit out on the ghats all day); depth is reserved for the different types of domes and spires that rise into the hot blue sky. This contrast is just what Purvis refers to in discussing another of the artist's works:Taylor effectively opposes great delicacy of architectural detail with a strong foreground. Although the city shown might be Muttra, it is more likely Varanasi on the River Ganges. In any case, many posters done for India travel during this period make use of the distinctive diamond shape seen here. Taylor was one of the principal, and finest, designers for the London Underground, creating 60 posters between 1908 and 1960. He also produced prolific work for railway and shipping clients.
