What was that car that just flew by? For an answer, all the nattily-dressed couple has to do is look around the corner at the poster on the wall for Amilcar (in a humorous, self-referential comment on the ephemeral nature of poster art, the artist renders it as simply the latest in a series on that corner- we can see the edges of earlier posters sticking out underneath.) The car is being promoted for comfort, economy, and, obviously, speed. Italian-born Garretto was already well-known for his political cartoons when he got to Paris. His 20-some posters show him to be a superb practitioner of Art-Deco principles, which he also applied to magazine covers for Italian, French, and American publications including Fortune, Vogue, and, especially, Vanity fair. Ultimately, he devoted himself to theatrical design.
