What was that car that just flew by? For an answer, all the nattily-dressed couple has to do is look around the corner at the poster on the wall for Amilcar (in a humorous, self-referential comment on the ephemeral nature of poster art, the artist renders it as simply the latest in a series on that corner- we can see the edges of earlier posters sticking out underneath.) The car is being promoted for comfort, economy,and, obviously, speed. Italian-born Garretto was already well-known for his political cartoons when he got to Paris. His 20-some posters show him to be a superb practitioner of Art-Deco principles, which he also applied to magazine covers for Italian, French, and American publications including Fortune, Vogue, and, especially, Vanity fair. Ultimately, he devoted himself to theatrical design. Giclee Prints are printed on heavy matte finish 180gsm German art paper using the finest Canon archival inks.
