How the Russians came up with their titles for imported films is one of the mysteries of the Soviet era. This one, which makes little sense in either Russian or English, is the name given to the Ukrainian release of one of Hitchcocks earliest directorial efforts in England, The Ring. It is the story of two prizefighters vying for the favors of Nelly (Lillian Hall-Davis), and incorrigible flirt. The good guy is Jack (Carl Brisson), a British native; his rival is Australian champ Bob (Ian Hunter). Even with no mystery to solve, the film has several Hitchcock touches: a title that operates on several levels and an ambiguous ending. Kuzkovsky's design focuses on the relationship between Nelly and Jack. With its strong diagonal line separating a sincere fella pictured in black and white from a knowing woman, rather luridly colored, it's clear that not all is well in the Ukraine.
