In this original maquette for the utterly superb Agricultural Society Roquefort cheese poster, we are once more treated to the multifaceted imagination of an artist capable of spontaneously generating interest in the most pedestrian of objects. Stop for a second to think about what's being advertised here. It's cheese. Cheese! Does dairy deserve such an exceptional calling card? That's rather beside the point, really, but what does strike me personally upon looking at this stunning work is that I don't even think of the blue-veined sheep milk byproduct it's promoting. All I see is art, and that is an exceptional feat--to allow art to bump crass commercialism to the side--in a world dominated with product placement. The variety of techniques and stylistic elements is also a mervel--the cloud-like puffs of sheep, the monumental fromage, the aurora borealis background, the block lettering which leaves no room for trademark error--working in unison to arrive at an end far greater than any of its individual parts. The colors in this original drawing are much richer than those seen in the few remaining specimens of the 4-sheet poster.
