Theres nothing like layering on some feel-good decadence to promote an already narcotically narcissistic product like cigarettes. But in Mauzans overindulgent hands, the simple act of lighting up a quality Cuban cigarette becomes a supreme act of sophisticated luxuriance. Bock and Company made cigarettes, as well as cigars. This corporation, founded by Gustav Bock in the 1850s, gained renown as a marketing and packaging innovator, credited by many with the invention of the cigar band. During one of Cubas many fiscal crisis periods, the company passed into foreign hands, eventually to be absorbed by the American Tobacco Companys Tobacco Trust. Bock quit making cigarettes, was moved to New Jersey in the 1930s, and remained an important part of American Tobaccos cigar arm into the 1950s.
