One of the 511 artists who responded to the call for entries in the second international poster competition for an Argentine cigarette made of Cuban tobacco and named Paris was an Italian: Aleardo Villa. The theme given was Cigarrillos Paris Son Los Mejores (Paris Cigarettes are the Best). Villas award winning design is Art Nouveau at its dreamiest; half-undressed woman smoking langorously in a bed of flowers is a memorable, beautifully-executed design. Villa began to work for the Ricordi firm in Milan in 1896; his posters for the Mele department store, liqueurs and other products are fine examples of Art Nouveau, and he ranks among the best commercial artists of the female figure. His promising career was cut short by his suicide in 1906.
