Negresco, a Rumanian gypsy, was one of a group of foreigners who brought their financial resources to bear in developing the Riviera during the period after the First World War, the golden age of the grand (hotel) palaces. Nice, capital of the Cote dAzur, boasted the greatest number of these. The faØade of the wedding cake of the hotel with its splendid location facing the sea and first-class restaurant remains unchanged; the interior has recently been restored to the opulence seen in the vignette lower left. Even the highly decorative framing device of this image heralding the opening in 1912 suggests that society lived well. Rare!
