Blue Trunks has Red Trunks head spinning--all of him, in fact--as he pounds him into a cutlet. This being a comedy film from the Soviet film studio Sovkino. Red Trunks is presumably the good guy, which may be why the equally good, red girl below looks so distraught at her heros state. Which of course is destined by the laws of history to reverse itself in the second reel and bring about the downfall of Blue Trunks and an end to ring oppression. Under Soviet auspices the film industry was encouraged as a leading communications medium, and under Lenins new economic policy many foreign films were imported. The head of poster production, an artist named Yakov Ruklevsky, recruited a brilliant group of avant-garde constructivist designers. Of these the most prolific and talented were the brothers Vladimir and Georgi Stenberg. While techniques of film and photomontage were the point of departure for their posters, the Stenberg brothers, masters of color and the lithographic process, preferred to draw their images. The facilities available for printing photographic images simply did not give them the sharpness and color they desired. However, the photographic quality of their renderings was achieved by a primitive method of projecting film and photographic images to the desired size and then drawing over them.(In this poster) the rendering appears to mimic the flickering effect f film running out of synchronization, in order to achieve a sense of tension and movement (Modern Poster, pp. 29-30).
