In early Soviet Russia the workers holiday, May Day, always occasioned a commemorative poster. They usually depicted the smashing of burning of symbols of capitalism. This one is rather more festive: A maiden in white - a far cry from the usual begrimed and grim-faced worker-hero -strews roses. The slogan reads Long Live the Festival of the Workers of All Countries! Ivanov designed at least three other posters the same year - all what wed call public service massages about education and health, and all very striking images befitting what was, for millions, the most exciting and hopeful moment in history.
