Sandy Hook was above all a maritime painter-posterist for passenger and freight shipping lines. This poster for the 3rd International Boat Show, held at the Gran palais in Paris and on the nearest water, the Seine, is about as close as he ever got to a land-based subject. Mixing myth and mechanics, a merboy examines mans answer to tail fins. The lettering, layout and concept alike are unusual, simple and handsome - the blue text block at top reflecting the band of ocean below, and the swells of the creatures muscles echoing those of the clouds. A rare and impressive design.
