One of Italys most prolific posterists was born in Trieste, and appears to have become a painter and a portraitist without the benefit of any formal training in art. In 1891, he came to Milan to join Ricordi as a lithographic trainee, and proved to be such a quick study that he went on to become technical director within a year. He was a very versatile artist, as these next few posters will amply demonstrate. This was the winning entry in the contest to celebrate the opening of the Simplon Alpine tunnel in 1906, which provided the first direct link between Paris and Milan. With its dramatic coloration, it is one of metlicovitzs most famous and most inspired design. This is the smaller format, with text in German.
