Trained at the Royal Institute of Painters in watercolors, Clark was especially fond of military and historical subjects and became known for his posters of London pageantry. Many of the designs he created for LMS and LNER were reissued by British Railways. Here he turns his hand to a vacation poster promoting the Isle of Man, smack in the middle of the Irish Sea between England and Ireland. Using deeply saturated shades that are unusual for a watercolorist, he captures the entire bay scene??strolling crowds, looming cathedral, colored lights strung like sequins around the beach??right down to the flower clocks.
