A sumptuous design for Delhaize Brothers coffee that wallows in the orientalism so prevalent during the waning days of the 19th-century with hypnotic results. The steaming tendrils of the freshly brewed beans wrap about the young Arabic beauty as she reverentially hoists her morning cup, Byzantine detail combining with Art Nouveau indulgence to mesmerizing perfection. Hamner, the graphic pseudonym of portrait painter Herman Richir, produced many posters, a great deal of them created for the Brussels firm of Delhaize Freres. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts at Saint-Josse-ten-Noode in Brussels, and later taught at the Brussels Fine Arts Academy, also serving as the schools director.
