Far less passion-obsessed than the his other known Steinway design, this Axster-Heudtlass creation nevertheless conveys its melodious message towards a familial demographic, one perhaps a little less focused on the concert hall than on the dulcet strains of a private recital in a Steinway enriched home. The designers fascinating ability to play light off of fabric and objects give his work an edge that sets them apart, significantly differentiating them from standard promotional fare. Steinway & Sons is an enterprise that remains a testament to individual craftsmanship in an age of mass production. Founded in 1853 by German immigrant Henry Engelhard Steinway in a Manhattan Varick Street loft, the first piano produced by the company was sold to a New York family for $500. It is now displayed at New York Citys Metropolitan Museum of Art.
