Whether hes stylized for Art Deco promotional purpose or filling the screen with charisma, Cary Grant was an actor in a league of his own. His chemistry with Sylvia Sydney redeems the Thirty Day Princess, the Preston Sturges penned film revolving around an envoy from one of the many mythical Eurpoean kingdoms so popular in the entertainment milieu of the early 20th century. Here, Princess Zizzi (Sydney) of one such imaginary country comes to New York to float a bond issue to help keep her realm solvent. Well, wouldnt you know it, she promptly catches the mumps and is quarantined for a month. To keep the campaign alive, a look-alike third-rate actress is found to act as a substitute royal personage. Grants character, who opposes the bond issue, smells a rat from the get-go, but can?t help himself from falling for the faux-princesss charms. I probably don?t need to tell you the rest, except that Sydney seemed to be having a royal time playing both female leads.
