A dramatic poster indeed from the Stenbergs for, as the text reads A historical drama in 7 parts and prologue. The film, directed by A. Ivanosvky, tells the story of what could be considered - and was, by the Soviets - the beginning of the Russian revolution, though it occurred 100 years before. In 1812 the Russians succeeded in rolling back the French, but not French revolutionary and liberal ideas. These were brought back by Russian soldiers, chiefly well-educated officers, who became the core of what would be called the Decemberists. It was the first Russian conspiracy aiming to overthrow not merely one czar but the system itself. And replace it by a republic or a constitutional monarchy. It had little broad support and was none too well organized. A coup in St. Petersburg in December 1825 failed; the five top leaders - one of whom, the dashing young Sestujhev, is depicted here in chains - were hanged from a bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress. Thousands of others were arrested and hundreds were exiled to Siberia, and the now Czar, Nicholas 1, built a new security police force of fearsome efficiency.
