Commarond was a landscape painter from Lyon who specialized in mountain and ocean views. Along with Broders and Soubie, he produced some of the best French railway posters of the 1920s and 30s. And though all of the artists evocative skills are firmly in place in this advertisement for an air show which convened at the southern end the Jura and the foothills of the Alps, we are treated to a fantastic vision not normally associated with artists traditional travel posters. It would appear that Commarond is suggesting that humans have taken over as the supreme rulers of the sky, and to that end, places his birdman at the lead of a seemingly endless aerial procession of flying machines. Whatever the interpretation, the design stands on its own as a spectacular flight of fancy.
